Three’s a crowd to assess seed physiological quality for vegetable Brassica
The French-British-Japanese collaboration initiated through the VIGERM project supported by ISTA in 2019 continues to spread publications and methods.
A third article from the project was published at the end of last year in the journal Seed Science and Technology [1]. It concerns the early evaluation of germination and vigour of 4 vegetables from the Brassicaceae family: cabbage, radish, mustard and Chinese cabbage. It joins the two previous publications in the same journal [3,5] and highlights the trials carried out at GEVES during the training of a teacher from Tokyo University of Agriculture.
The comparative tests organised by GEVES in 2021 with 6 other volunteer laboratories from the ISTA Germination and Vigour Committees on 3 seed lots of cabbage, 2 lots of cauliflower and 5 lots of mustard resulted in a method validation for a radicle emergence test globally useable for vegetable Brassicas approved in 2024 by the ISTA Vigour Committee. The Technical Committee has therefore submitted to the Executive Committee a proposal for an amendment to the ISTA Rules which, if approved at the next general assembly, should lead to the addition of the method in 2026 Rules edition. In the meantime, the method validation report will soon be published in Seed Testing International, available on the ISTA website.
A total of three publications [1, 3, 5], two papers at the ISTA Symposium 2022 [2, 6] and one ISTA method validation report [4] have been produced by this international project.
