CTPS Beet and Industrial Chicory Section: an unprecedented 2026 season and outlook for 2027

The CTPS Beetroot and Industrial Chicory Section met on Thursday 15 October in Paris.

On this occasion, a review was carried out of the VSCU 2026 trials, which were characterised by exceptional summer weather conditions. Successive heatwaves and water stress led to a particularly severe and unprecedented outbreak of the Lixus weevil and Rhizopus. It is therefore essential to characterise the trials properly in order to interpret the results correctly. As regards the yellowing trials in sugar beet, the first year of co-inoculation trials has proved encouraging.

The Section also reviewed the updated genetic progress graphs for sugar beet. Discussions also took place on the prospects for developments in seed treatments for the 2027 growing season.

Finally, several forward-looking topics were discussed, including the 2027 trial, the work of the VSCU committees, the work of the Control and Certification Committee in relation to the drafting of secondary legislation under the PRM Regulation, and the progress of the SPAD 2 plan roadmap and the main difficulties encountered in its implementation.
