GEVES participation in the EPPS Symposium on Phenotyping in Bonn, Germany

The EPPS (European Plant Phenomics Symposium) brought together around 350 participants from the scientific community and industry in mid-September in Bonn, Germany.

The participants were able to discuss the latest innovations, methods and applications in variety and seed evaluation under controlled conditions and in the field. As part of Emphasis, the European plant phenotyping research structure, GEVES teams presented their work on genomic integration, data science and strategies to accelerate the selection of crops resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses linked to climate change and to support sustainable agroecosystems. 16 September also provided an opportunity to visit the plant phenotyping facilities at the Jülich Plant Phenotyping Centre (JPPC), including the growScreen-Rhizo 3 in the greenhouse for non-invasive root phenotyping, and the Klein Altendorf campus of the University of Bonn, featuring a phenotyping ramp on a plot where carbon dioxide is injected to study the influence of CO2 on crops.

In the context of the European Phenet project, Valérie Cadot presented two posters on new phenotyping tools for detecting and quantifying two straw cereal diseases using AI and lightweight RGB sensors (smartphones, tripods, literal poles):

  • Automated detection of Fusarium Head blight symptoms on wheat spikes using Deep Learning on field RGB imaging
  • Development of deep learning models to detect and quantify symptoms of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus in barley using RGB images

Didier Demilly presented a retrospective poster covering 20 years of experience in characterising digital phenotyping of germination in over 1.4 million seeds, and Sherif Hamdy presented a poster entitled « Unsupervised Contaminant Detection in Pelleted Seeds Using Computed Tomography ».
