For its 51stedition, the meeting of the UPOV TechnicalWorking Party for Ornamental (TWO) washosted by the PVRO/IPONZ (New Zealand Plant VarietyRigts Office and IntellectualProperty Office of New Zeland) in Christchurch, South Island of New Zealand, fromFebruary 17 to 22, 2019. GEVES presented 3 of the 11 guidelines currentlybeingrevised.
Experts from the 12 UPOV memberdelegationspresent, the international community of breeders of asexuallyreproducedornamentals and fruit varieties (CIOPORA) and a delegationfromIndonesia, present as observers, discussedgeneral UPOV topics and issues specific to DUS studiesforornamental plants, such as the definition of "growing cycle" for ornamental plants and the concepts of trees and shrubs and theirdefinitions.
11 guidelines underrevisionwerediscussed, GEVES presented the revision of the Berberis, Hydrangea and Lagerstroemiaguidelines.
The technicalvisittook place at Broadfield Gardenswheredifferent collections of nativespecies, such as Clianthus, Pseudopanax, Neopanax and Agathiswerepresented. The visitcontinued at the ManaakiWhenuaLandcareResearch Centre where DUS tests are carried out. In-vivoreference collections as well as a Agapanthusbreedingprogram werepresented to us.
Finally the group visited the "New ZealandFlax (Phormium) collection" wherewereceived a demonstration on the extraction of leaffibres.
Next year, the TWO willtake place in June in Leiden, Netherlands. Echinacea and Magnoliawillbe part of the new technical discussions.
