What is a genetic resource?
New varieties studied by GEVES, especially those for inscription in the catalogue, are the result of a long creation process with the objective of meeting the changing needs of farmers with regard to for example, changing production methods, environmental considerations, or changes in consumer demand/requirements. To achieve these goals the characteristics present in different plant material have to be re-united in one variety.
A genetic resource is genetic material with an actual or potential value for the breeder, be it from a current or ancient, wild or cultivated variety. However, whatever the source of the material it is still necessary to identify the characteristics of the genetic resource and for it to be available in sufficient quantity (either as seeds or cuttings) to be able to use it in a selection program.
In France, this work of identification and multiplication is carried out by both public bodies such as INRA, GEVES, Agrocampus Ouest and private seed companies.
Who manages genetic resources in France?
Created by the French Government in 1983, the Bureau of Genetic Resources (BRG) was created with the aim of designing a structure able to develop and conduct national policy on animal, plant and microorganism genetic resources, to bring together stakeholders (project leaders, producers, researchers and breeders) and to harmonize their work.
One of the most important achievements of the BRG was the creation in 1988 of a national charter for the management of genetic resources in France, which brought together 6 ministries and 7 research organizations.
All conserved genetic resources are part of National and sometimes International Collections.
At the international level the programs include: the Global Plan of Action for Phytogenetic Resources through the FAO, European programs ECP/GR ECP/GR : European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources for cultivated species and EUFORGEN for forest species.
GEVES is currently involved in the management of the genetic resources of three vegetable groups: artichokes and cardoons, chicory and solanaceae.
