Variety information

In the agricultural sector the word "variety” is a very precise term. New varieties of cultivated species are created by specialized breeders. However, before a new variety can be sold it has to be denominated, identifiable, distinct compared to existing varieties, homogenous, and stable over time (DUS). It is the role of the GEVES to establish these facts.

The GEVES is the official body in France, which carries out DUS trials in field or in laboratories on new varieties to ensure that new varieties comply with the rules.

New varieties are :

  • Submitted to the CTPS by breeders for inscription in the Official French Catalogue (DUS and VCUS studies)
  • Submitted to The French National Body for plant Breeders Rights (INOV) and The Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) to obtain plant breeders’ rights on a national and European level.
