 1) Principal Missions

The role of BioGEVES is to develop propose and implement tools and methods which aid GEVES to achieve its mission.
It deals with 12 000 samples each year and presents its expertise in the form of articles published in scientific journals, posters,  and oral communication to professionals and students.
Its principal missions are :

  • To conduct molecular and biochemical analyses on varieties and seeds in order to :
    •  Characterize the varieties
    • Check the identity and varietal purity
    • Check for the presence of resistance genes
    • Assess technological characteristics
    • Detect specific sequences of, for example, GMOs and pathogens

  • Improve and develop methods :
    • To monitor scientific and technical developments
    • To participate in research programmes
    • To adapt, optimize and validate international protocols
    • To participate in and manage inter-laboratory ring tests
    • To be involved in the standardization of methods

  • Enhance the scientific knowledge and expertise of the laboratory :
    • To train professionals and students
    • To give expert advice
    • To contribute to the development of techniques in a formal framework

2) Means and Organisation

  • Around 20 engineers and technicians

  • High level laboratories and equipment at two separate sites :
    • Beaucouzé    (49)
    • Magneraud (17)

  • Organized into  three separate areas :
    • Genotyping : varietal characterization
    • Detection : GMO and Pathogens – other sequences
    • Biochemistry : Analysis of constituents

  • About 45 methods are routinely used employing :
    • Electrophoresis of proteins
    • Chromatography HPLC and GPC
    • Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)
    • Real-Time PCR DNA amplification process
    • Multi-capillary electrophoresis

  • The analyses done in the BioGEVES Laboratory are for :
    • SNES
    • SEV
    • lSOC
    • DGAL (The Directorate for food of the French Agriculture ministry)
    • Specialized experts
    • Participants in the sector (for example, cooperatives, seed companies)

3) Reference role

BioGEVES is one of  three national reference laboratories for the detection and quantification of GMOs . It has been COFRAC accredited for this activity since 2004 (N°1-1540 on www.cofrac.fr).

In its capacity as a national reference laboratory BioGEVES is part of the European Network of GMO Laboratories and is involved in this network’s working groups.

BioGEVES has obtained authorization from the trade union the « grands moulins de Paris » with regard to VID (Variety identification) testing of durum wheat.

BioGEVES is authorized by the INAO (National Institute for Origins and Quality) for GMO research and plant matrices  (https://www.inao.gouv.fr).

On a national and international basis BioGEVES is often called upon to carry out expert appraisals.

BioGEVES is present on AFNOR commissions and is thus an active participant in the work of standardizing methods of analysis.
